With the high cost and increasing rates of electricity, lots are seeking alternate ways to conserve and utilize energy.  Until recently there was a lack there of fair competition between electric rates and service providers.  If you are a consumer and in good standing with your current Electric Service provider, current with your charges and payments, consumers now qualify to have the flexibility to choose alternate electric providers.  Most of these alternate electricity providers purchase electricity at wholesale cost and in bulk.  In return electricity providers can offer a lower comparable electricity at variable rates.  In order to receive these rates  you as a consumer must have a good record with your current provider in order to switch electricity providers.

Due to the high cost and seasonal increases in electricity lots are still struggling, recovering financially from the long winter and seasonal rate hikes and do not qualify to participate in selecting an alternate source of electricity as the rates continue to climb, seeking other alternatives.

Since as early as the seventh century B.C people have been utilizing magnifying glasses to concentrate the sun's rays to produce fire.  It wasn't until the the early 1800s that is was discovered selenium produced photo connectivity. The photovoltaic effect found in solidified selenium, lead to the invention of the solar cell in the 50s. The solar cell innovation then piloted the silicon solar cell, the solar battery. In 2008 the U.S. Dept of energy renewable energy lab made a major breakthrough, setting a world record in solar cell efficiency with a photovoltaic device converting an estimated 40% of sunlight rays into electricity, which we now refer to as solar power or renewable energy.

In 2014, The U.S. installed an estimated 6,201 megawatts (MW) of solar photovoltaics (PV) of concentrating solar power to reach 20 gigawatts (GW), the total installed capacity was enough to power 4 million American homes. 32 percent of new electric generating capacity came from solar in 2014, and the industry now employs nearly 175,000 workers, more than tech giants Google, Apple, Facebook and Twitter combined, creating a solar boom and still growing.

Once a high class commodity, solar products are now fit for the middle class, as the United States government is now offering incentives and common programs to convert to renewable solar energy.  As utility rates continue to rise, residential solar power has become widely available in most state towns and communities in an effort to conserve energy in turn reducing large-scale utility costs. The opportunity cost of having solar panels installed on a home obviously requires time and research, as wants a scarce commodity, now abundant of manufacturers and installers to satisfy our economic needs in changing times.

The solar energy movement, incentives and programs have become widely marketed, most solar products can be purchased online for self installation if you choose to diy at discounted rates. As we become more educated in the scarcity of our natural resources and costs, as is projected we will start to see more and more independently operated solar products on the market as the solar technology movement continues to improve our energy efficiency in solar related products.
