DIY Clemetine Scented Candle

We found a great video by Apartment Therapy TV which you are sure to love! The clementine candle tutorial video is part survival tutorial, part “cool project” and part aromatherapy! Clementines are a variety of a mandarin orange. The skin is deep orange in color and it looks smooth and glossy. They are very easy to peel and are almost always seedless. They contain less acid than oranges so they are sweeter. The rind contains oils that are mostly made of limonene. These essential oils are often used in fragrances.

A candle works by vaporizing the wax/oil and drawing it up the wick where it burns. The combustion chemical reaction produces water, carbon dioxide and perhaps some carbon / carbon monoxide if there is incomplete combustion.

After cutting, removing the fruit of the clementine, the white part is exposed. This white part is called the pericarp or the albedo. This part is made of pectin, a type of plant polymer – somewhat similar to the cellulose that you’d ordinarily find in a candle wick.

DIY Scented Air Freshener

Aromatherapy has been used for over 6000 years, first by the Chinese who used to burn special herbs to encourage harmony and well-being. Aromatherapy has also been known to have positive effects on mood, physiology and behavior. In fact, it could could argued that aromatherapy is older than the medicinal practices we use today.

Easily spice up the aroma in any room or area with your favorite aromatic scent with a natural scented air freshener! Scented air fresheners are wonderful for aromatherapy and make wonderful year-round scented gifts for all to enjoy.  The possibilities are endless when you diy. You may be as creative as you wish. The sky is the limit,.

Scented air fresheners are a great diy project and require very little time to make, but 5 minutes.  This project is 100% safe and natural to create when you diy. In this tutorial we will just cover the simple basics of creating a natural gel scented air freshener to kick-start your aromatherapy project.

To begin this diy  aromatherapy project you first will need the following items... Heat proof jars/containers,  food coloring,  essential oil,  4 packets-unflavored gelatin,  1 T. salt,  2 cups cold water.

Take your jars or containers and with your food coloring, place a couple of drops in each container or jar, not more than 2 or 3. Then, add about 30 drops of your favorite scented essential oil, give or take. Adding additional essential oil will result in a stronger scenting aroma.

Now for the fun part. Gather up 4 envelopes of unflavored gelatin, a tablespoon of salt, and 2 cups of cold water. Why salt? Salt (or vodka) apparently help to keep the gel from molding. Interesting fact, isn't it! Get one cup of water boiling on the stove. When it begins to boil, whisk in the gelatin, stirring until it's all dissolved.

Then, pour in the other cup of cold water and the salt, stirring until the salt is dissolved. Quickly pour the hot gelatin mixture in each of your jars, and then use a disposable stick or spoon to stir it into the oil and food coloring. Let these gel overnight, and then voila! Scented Air freshener!

Tip

Just to give you a ballpark figure of the life span of one of these spiffy aroma treats, a baby food jar sized will last about a month. Do be conscience of container sized when creating your scented air freshener.
